Snead, who died of pneumonia at the age of 65 years. He was born in Northampton Co, a farmer and the husband of Susan U. Snead. His son John D. Snead gave the information. His body was interred in Scott Hall, Onancock, Acc Co, VA.(449) His tombstone shows him as Col. Edward S. Snead, husband of Susan Uspher Snead.
He married Susan Upshur Dennis 6 Dec 1826 (lic) in Somerset Co, MD.(450) They were shown only as Edward S. Snead and Susan U. Dennis. No other information was given.
Susan was born 20 Jun 1799 in Somerset Co, MD.(451) Susan(452) was the daughter of John Dennis and Eleanor (-----). Susan died 31 Jan 1864 at 64 years of age.(453) Her body was interred in Scott Hall, Onancock, Acc Co, VA.(454) Her tombstone shows her as Susan Upshur Snead, the wife of Col. Edward S. Snead and the daughter of John & Eleanor Dennis of Somerset Co, MD.
Edward was named in his father's will 18 Oct 1792 in Northampton Co, VA.(455) He would have been the child my wife goes with in the will of Smith Snead and was given the certificates in the possession of Major Parker or the money they sell for.
Edward was named in a land cause 4 Mar 1801 in Accomack Co, VA.(456) He was shown as Smith Snead, a son of Margaret Snead dec'd, and a nephew of Edward Ker the younger, also dec'd.
Edward was named as an heir of Rev War Vetran 31 Jan 1825 in Accomack Co, VA.(457) In the estate settlement of David Bowman, he was shown as Edward S. Snead and was to receive his 1/9 £115.17.5 in right of his mother, which was retained by William Seymour, his guardian. (Note: The settlement was finally recored on 31 Jan 1825, but the actual payment may have been years earlier, as David Bowman died in 1805.)
Edward was named in the will of a cousin 31 Jan 1826 in Accomack Co, VA.(458) He was shown as my friend Edward Smith Snead in the will of Edward H. Ker and was given my plantation at Onancock called Ker Place except that part thereof which lies to the west of the road leading from Onancock Town to Deep Creek mill & which part lying on the west part of said road was purchased by my father of John Guy. The Ker Place land estimated at between 800 & 1,000 acres. Also to Edward Smith Snead during his life my plantation on Chincoteague at present occupied by Ethel Lyon & my tract of land near Horn Town called Wolf Ridge at present occupied by Will Douglas free Negro & that tract of wood land adjoining the Wolf Ridge land usually called Hannah's Swamp & my undivided ½ of a tract of land in Somerset County, Maryland on Back Creek & ... & books, farming implements & every article of personal property in & about my house & farm called Ker Place & my stock on the farm in Somerset above mentioned apart of which stock is held in partnership by William D. Seymour & myself.
Edward was listed as a head of household in the census of 1850 in St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA.(459) He was shown as Edw'd S. Snead the head of HH#281, a 57 year old farmer, born in Northampton Co, VA, with real estate valued at $30,665. Listed with him were the following Sneads: Susan W., age 50 and born in Somerset Co, MD; Edw. K., a 22 year old student; Jno. D., age 19; Susan W. Jr., age 12; Margaret K., age 10; and Elizabeth D., age 8. Also listed was Emmie Kellam, age 22.
He made a will 7 Jul 1852 in Accomack Co, VA.(460) To my son Edward K. Snead the plantation on Chincoteague where William Turlington lives (& other persons) including all the land on Chincoteague given to me by my dec'd friend Edward H. Ker as named in his will. To my son John Dennis Snead & my daughters Susan W. Snead, Margaret K. Snead & Elizabeth D. Snead the plantation & land at Onancock Town called Ker Place. In this devise of Ker Place I intend to include the whole of the land at Onancock, devised to me by my friend Edward H. Ker dec'd. Also to my son John D. Snead & my daughters Susan W. Snead, Margaret K. Snead & Elizabeth D. Snead the land I bought of William Dix adjoining the same. Also to my son John D. Snead & daughters Susan W. Snead, Margaret K. Snead & Elizabeth D. Snead ... given to me in the will of Edward H. Ker dec'd. To my son Edward K. Snead my bookcase & books given to me by Edward H. Ker dec'd writing table & ... To my wife ... Extrs. to sell the undivided land in Somerset County, Maryland lying on Back Creek. Friend Edward P. Pitts & sons Edward K. Snead & John D. Snead Extrs. Codicil: 7 Jul 1852 - In the event of a division of Ker Place devised to my son John D. Snead & daughters that my son John D. Snead shall have the right to select either division of land after it has been divided. (Note: The plantation on Chincoteague was called "Corbin Hall.")
Edward's will was probated 25 Apr 1853 in Accomack Co, VA.(461) The 3 named Extrs. presented the will & there being no witnesses to the will or codicil, Thomas P. Bagwell & Robert J. Poulson testified to the handwriting. Robert J. Poulson, Isaiah N. Bagwell, Samuel C. White & Louis C. H. Finney were securities on the $30,000 bond.

John reported a death 17 Mar 1853 in Onancock, Acc Co, VA.(468) It was on this date that John D. Snead reported the death of his father Edw'd Snead, who died of pneumonia at the age of 65 years.
John was listed as a head of household in the census of 1860 in Onancock P.O., St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA.(469) He was shown as Dr. John D. Snead the head of HH#591, a 29 year old physician with real estate valued at $14,000 and personal property valued at $1,500. Listed with him were the following Sneads: Susan U., age 60 with personal property valued at $1,500; Susan W., age 21 with personal property valued at $6,000; Margaret K., age 20 with personal property valued at $6,800; Elizabeth D., age 19 with real estate valued at $15,000 and personal property valued at $600; Edward K., a 32 year old attorney at law with real estate valued at $50,000 and personal property valued at 6,500; Mary D., age 20; and Ellen D., age 3. Also listed were the following free blacks: Mary J. Silverthorn, age 8; Darkey Watson, age 58; Jenny Rogers, age 60; and Daniel Joynes, age 60. (Note: This was probably the wealthiest family in Accomack County.)
John deeded land as a gift 1866 in Onancock, Acc Co, VA.(470) Before his death in Mar 1866, John D. Snead, who had inherited Kerr Place from his father Col. Edward Smith Snead in 1853, deeded Kerr Place to his sisters Susan, Margaret and Elizabeth, provided they would pay his debts, otherwise it was to be sold. In 1875 commissioners sold the house and 7 acres to George W. Powell.
