Custis, the wife of Thos. and the daughter of Wm. M. & A.P. Scarborough.

She married Thomas Custis 7 Dec 1829 (bond) in Accomack Co, VA.(626) Jesse Kellam was the security on the M.L.B. of Thomas Custis of Jno. and Elizabeth P. Scarburgh, orphan of William M.

Thomas was born 12 Nov 1802 in Accomack Co, VA.(627) Thomas(628) was the son of John Custis and Tabitha Gillett. Thomas died 21 Dec 1840 at 36 years of age.(629) His body was interred in Old Custis Tract, Deep Creek, Acc Co, VA.(630) His tombstone shows him as Thomas Custis, the son of Jno. & Tabitha, who died on 21 Dec 1840, age 38(?) years, 11 months and 9 days, dates badly worn. (Note: If his age were 36 years it would fit better with his parents marriage.)

She made a will 11 Mar 1848 in Accomack Co, VA.(631) Tombstones be erected at the head & feet of my dec'd mother & at my own. To my sister Jane M. K. Kellam & my step mother Elizabeth M. Scarburgh $50 each as a small token of my gratitude to them for their kind attention to me during my sickness. To my friend Mary Ann Higgins $25. To my son John W. Custis ... & 50 acres of Cedar Island land which I now own, also Negro girl Caty until she arrives to age 30 when she is to be free ... To son Thomas E. C. Custis (under age) ... & Negro boy Henry until he arrives to age 35. To my 2 sons John & Thomas my Negro man John with the provision that he not be sold, but be hired out & the proceeds to them & should John become infirm & need support, then my 2 sons to support him jointly. My burial charges, debts & legacies be paid out the money due me from the estate of my uncle Hugh Ker ... & at the death of my sister Jane M. K. Kellam & step mother Elizabeth M. Scarburgh ... to William Bayly (son of Thomas Bayly my first cousin). To Hetty Harmon ... Two young Negroes Henry & Caty to my sons John & Thomas & then to be free at ages 35 & 30 ... & paid $20 each. Henry was age 7 last Christmas & Caty is now age 6. My friend & brother-in-law James W. Custis Esq. Extr. Witt: Luther H. Read, Frederick C. A. Kellam & B. H. Johnson.

Elizabeth's will was probated 24 Apr 1848 in Accomack Co, VA.(632) William P. Bayly & Edward P. Pitts securities.

John was named in his mother's will 11 Mar 1848 in Accomack Co, VA.(639) He was shown as a son John W. Custis in the will of Elizabeth A.P. Custis.

John was listed as a head of household in the census of 1860 in St. George Parish, Acc Co, VA.(640) He was shown as John W. Custis the head of HH#1198, a 27 year old farmer. Listed with him were Rose Custis, age 21; Elizabeth Major, age 25; and James C. Major, age 15.
