In Reply to: Smart WHITTINGTON, son of Col. William by E. W. Hendon
Smart Whittington (born 1676), son of Col. William Whittington II and Tabitha Scarburgh Smart, died as young boy, probably in his teens. A quote from the book "Virginia's Eastern Shore" in Accomack County, states "...Tabitha Scarburgh Smart, who was the first of the five wives of William Whittington II of Maryland. They had two children: SMART WHITTINGTON, WHO DIED WITHOUT ISSUE, and Tabitha Scarburgh Whittington, who married Edmund Custis,..."
Smart Whittington was still living as of the time his grandmother's (Tabitha Scarburgh) third husband, John Custis, wrote his will in 1690 and both Smart and his sister, Tabitha Scarburgh Whittington, were mentioned. It is presumed Smart Whittington was deceased by the time his great-grandmother, Mary Littleton-Scarburgh, wrote her will in 1691, because Smart is not mentioned in it and his sister is.
It has wrongly been published that Smart Whittington was the father of John Whittington (born 1700), who married Elizabeth Whittington (born abt 1705) on June 20, 1723 in Albemarle Co. VA. This John Whittington's parents are still unidentified.
I recently posted a photocopy of a portrait of Smart Whittington's maternal grandmother, Tabitha Scarburgh (wife of John Smart and three others) from the book "Virginia's Eastern Shore" on my Home Page at:

iv. ANN SCARBOROUGH, b. Abt. 1706; m. HENRY WRIGHT, Abt. 1735; b. Abt. 1700.
Notes for ANN SCARBOROUGH:
Ann 'Nanny' Scarburgh was born in Accomack Co, VA circa 1704. She married Henry Wright II circ 1735. Henry was born circa 1700 in Accomack Co, VA. Henry was the son of Mary Wright. Henry Wright, the eldest son of Mary Wright and an unknown father, was born circa 1700. He was of age by 1726, when he deeded his brother William part of their mother's land, but apparently unmarried, as the deed was not co-signed by a wife. Henry Wright was living in Essex County, Virginia, on 8 June 1728, when he gave Henry Scarburgh his Power of Attorney, to act for him in Accomack County (Deeds, Wills & Etc 1715 - 1729, part 2, p. 249). Comfort Scarburgh and Ann Scarburgh were witnesses to this document. It is possible this Henry Wright married first in Essex County and lived there. However, Winfred Scarburgh died testate in Accomack County by 30 November 1756, naming Nanny Wright and a grandson as Henry Wright in her will (Wills 1752 - 1757, p. 358). Her will indicates Henry Wright had married Nanny (Ann?) Scarburgh and had a son Henry by 1756. No record has been found of the death of this Henry Wright in Accomack County or elsewhere in Virginia. That he had one son, who inherited his mother Mary Wright's land is apparent, and a second son from later deed and survey records.
Ann was named in her father's will 31 Aug 1735 in Accomack Co, VA. She was named as daughter Ann (no surname shown) in the will of Henry Scarburgh. Since no surname was shown, it is assumed that she was not married at the time.
Ann was named in her mother's will 8 Sep 1756 in Accomack Co, VA. She was named as Nanny Wright (relationship not shown) in the will of Winifred Scarburgh, who also named a grandson Henry Wright.

She married RICHARD BAYLY, JR. Bef. September 1693 in Accomack Co., VA, son of RICHARD BAYLY and MARY JONES. He was born Abt. 1665, and died Bef. 01 June 1708 in Accomack Co., VA.
Notes for RICHARD BAYLY, JR.:
42 i. Ursula7 Scarburgh Jr. was born in England before 1672. Ursula died circa 1730. She married Capt. Richard Bayly Jr. (III) before 1693 in Accomack Co, VA. Richard was born circa 1665 in Accomack Co, VA. Richard was the son of Major Richard Bayly (II) and Mary Jones. He married Rosanna (-----) circa 1688. There were named in the will of Richard Bayly in 1726 when he left to grandson Henry Bayly, son Richard and Rosana Bayly dec'd, 250 acres on the north side of Craduck Creek.
Richard died May 1708 in Accomack Co, VA, at 42 years of age. It is not positive that this Captain Richard Bayly Jr. is the same as the Richard Bayly II referred to in Whitelaw, who was a descendant of Richard Bayly I (est. 1600-1661). There are many references to the name Richard Bayly in Whitelaw. A quick search of Whitelaw indicates that Richard Bayly I (1600-1661) came to Virginia via the Barbadoes in 1640 and married Elizabeth, widow of Henry Weede who died in 1644. They moved from the Henry Weede property (N88) to a part of A18 on the south side of Craddock Creek next to A17, which was Colonel Edmund Scarburgh's property. The was the area were Colonel Edmund's son, Edmund Jr., and Edmund Jr.'s daughter Ursula resided. Therefore, it would seem most likely that the Richard Bayly Jr. that Ursula married would have been Richard Bayly II. Richard Bayly II (est. 1645-1728) was married in 1665 to Mary Jones, sister of a Henry Jones and daughter of Mary Harper. He later married Elizabeth, who survived him. He had at least two sons. One was Richard Bayly III, wife Rosana, who had three sons: Edmund Bayly (? -1796), Richard (?-1769) wife Betty, and Henry (?-?). Richard Bayly II's other son was Edmund, to whom he gave 800 acres of land in 1694. The explanation could be that Richard Bayly II married Ursula Scarburgh after Mary Jones and before his last wife Elizabeth. Edmund could have been the son of Ursula and Richard, as it was a Scarburgh family name. [Whitelaw pg 460, 635-9, 642, 846, 892, 898, 1051]
Ursula immigrated to circa 1672. Ursula was named in her husband's will 15 Nov 1707 in Accomack Co, VA. She was named as wife Ursilia in the will of Richard Bayly Jr.
Ursula was named in her father's will 21 May 1711 in Accomack Co, VA. She was named as daughter Ursley and given only 1 shilling. It was noted that she having had her part of the estate of Col. Edmond Scarburgh.

4. RICHARD3 BAYLY (JR.)(CAPT.) (RICHARD2, RICHARD1) birth date unknown. RICHARD died before June 1, 1708 in Accomack Co., VA. (Stratton Nottingham, Wills & Admin. Acc. Co. p.37) He married twice. He married ROSANNA (N). He married URSULA SCARBURGH before September 19,1693. URSULA was the daughter of EDMUND SCARBURGH (Capt.) and URSULA WHITTINGTON. William Whittington d.1720 Somerset Co. MD named the sons of Ursula as "kinsmen." (Myers & Dorman, Purse & Person, p. 548) (Children of Ursula provided by Dan Trimble) Named his wife Ursilia, sons: Henry, Richard, Edmund and Whittington, and daughters: Lacey, Ursilia and Joyce, and his brother, Edmund. Richard's father named his grandsons: Edmund, Henry and Richard, as sons of Richard and his wife Rosana. The other children are probably by Ursula Whittington. However, the will of William Whittington named two sons of Ursula Whittington: Edmond and Whittington?? The Bayly/Bayley line is NOT solid and has been pieced together from will and land abstracts. The ensuing Edmund/Edmonds can well be confused.

46. MATILDA15 SCARBOROUGH (EDMOND14, EDMOND13, EDMUND12, HENRY11, HENRY10, JOHN9, HENRY8, HENRY7, JOHN6, JOHN5, NICHOLAS4 SCARDBURG, ROBERTE3 DE SCARDEBURG, HENRY2, ?1 SCARDEBURG) was born Abt. 1690. She married JACOB DUEY Abt. 1710. He died Bef. 14 May 1734.
Notes for MATILDA SCARBOROUGH:
49 viii. Matilda Scarburgh was born in Accomack Co, VA circa 1687. She married Jacob Dewey circa 1710. Jacob was born circa 1680 in Northampton Co, VA. Jacob died 1734 in Northampton Co, VA, at 54 years of age. In 1734 Jacob Dewey left the Dewey Part of Whitelaw's tract N120 (west of Exmore) to his wife Matilda, and then to a daughter Tabitha, the wife of Phillip Parker; after her death it was to go to her son Jacob, but if he died without issue then to other heirs of Tabitha. After the death of Phillip Parker (1741), Tabitha married Richard Johnson and in 1750 the Johnsons had the entail docked and the land sold by General Court deed to Benjamin D. Gray, who gave a local deed back to Johnson alone, and the next year Johnson left all his lands to a son Joshua. In 1755 a suit for the land was brought, from which we learn that Jacob D. Parker had died without issue and that Tabitha had married Richard Johnson. However, she had had another Parker son named Caleb and after his death his son Thomas Hall Parker now claimed the land under the will of Jacob Dewey (Whitelaw, pp. 543/4). For more on this see the Whitelaw source.
Matilda was named in her father's will 21 May 1711 in Accomack Co, VA. She was named as daughter Matilda and given only 1 shilling. It was noted that she having had her part of the estate of Col. Edmond Scarburgh.
Matilda was named in her sister's will 30 Nov 1713 in Accomack Co, VA. She was named as sister Matilda, wife of Jacob Duey, and was given part of 250 acres in Northampton Co, on the north side of the head of Nuswadox Creek.

<<I've been looking at the line of Edmund and Priscilla (Meredith). They have descendants in Montgomery Co. through (I think) the Moore line. However, their William was born 1714 and died 1756:
"He made a will 17 Aug 1756 in Accomack Co, VA.(66795) He named a wife Alice and a son William. The son William was to get land which "my grandfather gave to my father lying on Cradock Creek." To wife Alice all the surplus land to be found in all the lands I possess for life and then to my son William. Wife Alice was the executrix. Witt: Mitchell Scarburgh, Norwich Rodgers and Daniel Fisher.
Meredith's will was probated 28 Sep 1756 in Accomack Co, VA.(66796) Mitchell Scarburgh was named guardian of Edmund Scarburgh, infant heir at law of William Scarburgh."
(Miles Files, 2000]
Since he died in 1756, he could not be the father of our Melba. However, he had a son, William, whose first wife is unknown to the researchers of the Eastern Shore and in particular, M.K. Miles, who has put together a CD of several thousand Eastern Shore descendants with documentation. William had to be born before 1735/1736 because he is not given a guardian at the death of William Meredith, while his brother Edmund is given one.
That makes him old enough to have a son, William by his first wife who could have been Sarah.
However, the children listed in this William's will by his first wife do not include David or Joshua (although one is listed as Abraham J.). [[These aren't names used in Melba's line, you know]] >>

As far as I can tell, the idea that Elizabeth Edwards is the wife of Edmund is found on p 33-34 of Southern Kith and Kin where Jewel Davis Scarborough says:
"Eastern Shore: Scarborough
Col. Edmund Scarborough, 4th of the name in Virginia, died in 1753 and left a will in York County. He was a Burgess from Accomac, and son of Edmund Scarborough, third, and Elizabeth Edwards. He was married twice. First wife: Priscilla.
Issue:
Elizabeth, b July 14, 1714, d. Nov 14, 1777 m 1734, Col. Thomas Hall
Issue:
Margaret, Anna Maria, Jane and Elizabeth.
Second wife: Anna Maria Jones, daughter of Rev. Rowland Jones, Rector of Bruton Parish and great-grandfather of Martha Dandridge. Anna Maria Jones was married four times, but had no Scarborough children.
(Above data is from Family Bible of Mrs. S.P. Ward of Belle Haven, Virginia. The Bible was printed in England in 1725.)"
It is unclear to me what "above data" is from the Family Bible and whose Bible it was.

Subject: Scarborough - Eureka
The information that I alluded to that "Her sister-in-law Hannah Scarborough
was married to Somerset Dickerson, the brother of Edmond Dickerson, Jr,"
should not be put in your files as to the Hannah Scarborough - everything
else is documented as is the first name Hannah but not the Scarborough. This
information was forwarded to me from Ralph A. Riggin who has the Golden Lyon
website. His e-mail adddress is: rariggin@goldenlyon.com. He indicated that
the information was sent in response to a web posting, but there was no
verification and he had not checked it out, but gave the impression that he
was skeptical since there were facts in the correspondence that were confused
in some other points - right names but wrong places. When asked to give me
the source so I could correspond with the party, I received no response. So
I would put a big queston mark beside it and not put it in your data base
unless there is further proof. It could be true but at this point it is just a whisper in an e-mail.
The information that you sent me is pay dirt. It all fits. Elizabeth _____who married Edmund Dickerson, Jr. and had a daughter Scarborough (who married Willaim Smullen) has to be Elizabeth Marshall (daughter of Anne Toft who when married to John Marshall, had her by Col. Edmund Scarborough II).
Reading in Old Somerset on the Eastern Shore, is the comment: Mistress Anne Toft, of Accomack, a person of rare charm and power." It shows her business dealings with Randall Revell, one of her partners in purchasing land and settling people on it. He was married to a sister of Colonel Edmnund
Scarborough (II). Try this one: This mistress Anne Toft, we may say in passing, is revealed by the Accomack, Virgina, records to have occupied a very close relationship (the nature of which the records fail to reveal) to the powerful Colonel Edmund Scarborough, the beneficiary of whose munificence
she most certainly became.
Any thing further on the fight about the paternity of the daughters, etc. and referral to orgininal reference materials would be appreciated. Please bill me for any expense.
Anne Toft could prove to be as interesting person as Colonel Edmund Scarborough (II).
Sincerely,
Robert Leland Johnson

Notes for SAMUEL HOPKINS:
Samuel Hopkins (1636-1711) m. Hannah Turner 5 Dec 1667 New Haven CT.
They went to Accomack Va. then to Somerset MD. Had the following children:
Samuel (1668-1744) m. Jennet Noble (6 children)
*NATHANIEL (c1674-will of 1739) m. Dennis Scarborough (see below)
Hannah (1670-?) m. William Whittington (his 4th wife) no issue
Temperance (c1676-bef. 1711) m. Andreas Dirrickson/Derrickson
(2 children)
*NATHANIEL had ch:
Samuel received part of Stockley's Adventure
HAMPTON (will 15 Feb 1745) " "
had at least a Samuel, but I don't know other children.
**Matthew (will 1765) received land called Good Hope
Dennis (female) m. Johnson
Hannah m. Murray
**MATTHEW had sons
Samuel received part of Good Hope, Stockley's Adventure
HAMPTON m. Leah (surname unknown) rec. pt. Stockley's "
Since the Hopkins family property seems to have been close to the
Virginia border, this looks like a pretty good clue. You might try the
Maryland or Delaware will indexes to see if there are any Hamptons
mentioned in Hopkins' wills for the time period you are searching. The
Hampton Hopkins who died in 1745 might ALSO have named a son Hampton.
Many of the Hopkinses moved out of MD and DE looking for better land, so
they could easily have ended up south or west.
Good luck.
