Edward James Savage

Researched by Nora Miller Turman 21-Nov-1988

Edward James Savage, son of George of John and Harriet Chambers Bull, married Mary Elizabeth Belote with a marriage bond dated 18-Oct-1847. His entry in the 1850 United States Census for St. George Parish of Accomack County listed two children.

Mary Elizabeth, born Dec-1829, was the daughter of Charles Belote, a large land owner in the area east and southeast of Onancock, VA. In his will dated 24-May-1843 and probated 26-Jun-1843, Charles left two tracts of land to his daughter and money for her keep and education. Her guardian delivered the remaining part of the money to Edward James after the marriage. Since Mary Elizabeth was almost 18 years of age, permission of the guardian was not required for the marriage.

Edward J. and Mary E. lived and reared their family on the tract of land near the "Cross Roads" where the town of Onley was formed. They sold the other land (they owned) in small parts and Mary E. sold some lots to her sons. The deeds stated that they were near Onley and on the road to Onancock.

The 1860 Census listed the four sons and a later record showed that one child had been born and died before the 1860 Census. Edward J. stated that his real estate was valued at $3000 and personal property at $500. Edward J. died before the 1870 Census was taken on 22-Jul-1870. Mary E. was listed as head of the household with all four sons living at home. She listed her real estate value at $4000 and personal property at $500. She listed her occupation as farmer.

Mary's son Thomas J. Savage, born in 1856, remained single and lived with his mother. On 3-Mar-1894 Mary deeded a one acre lot to Thomas J. for $1. The 1900 Census listed Thomas J. as head of the household and Mary E., aged 70 years old, as the only other member.

Mary E. died intestate on 18-Jul-1901. Her obituary appeared in the county paper on 20-Jul-1901:

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Savage, widow of Edward J. Savage, died at her home in Onley on Thursday, aged 70 years. The deceased was a lady of fine character and was held in the highest esteem by a large circle of relatives and friends. Four sons, Edward J., Charles B., Thomas J., and Loyd survive her ...
Mary E. was buried in the family plat which was set aside for that purpose on her land. The graves were moved to Mt. Holly Cemetery, Onancock, VA. Prior to 30-Apr-1912, the heirs of Mary E. signed a deed for the plat to the estate of Charles B. who had bought the land Mary E. had owned at the time of her death. The land was now a part of the town of Onley, VA.
