Generation One

1. John¹ Outten was born circa 1660. He married Mary (possibly Mary Gray, daughter of Jane Jones), circa Jan 1684 at Somerset Co., MD. His will written on 29 Jan 1708 at Somerset Co., MD, mentions pregnant wife Mary, eldest sons Thomas and John and youngest sons Samuel and Abraham.  He died before 27 May 1709 at Somerset Co., MD, when his will was proved. On 24 Mar 1710 at Somerset Co., MD, his estate accounting lists multiple payments and Mrs. Mary Outten as administratix.

2.      i. Thomas², born 11 Oct 1684 at Somerset Co., MD; married Sabro Jones.

3.      ii. John, born 23 May 1687 at Boquerternorton Plantation, Somerset Co., MD; married Sarah Purnell.

         iii. Samuel; born 20 Nov 1690 at Somerset Co., MD; Although Samuel's father mentions son Samuel in his 1708 will it appears that it was a second younger Samuel. This Samuel probably died before 1705 by which time the second Samuel would have been born.

4.      iv. Elizabeth, born between 1693 and 1699 at Somerset Co., MD; married George Truitt.

5.      v. Mary, born 25 Nov 1702 at Somerset Co., MD; married Daniel Selby; married Thomas Purnell III.

6.      vi. Capt. Abraham, born circa 1705 at Somerset Co., MD; married Rhoda Peale.

         vii. Samuel; born circa 1705 at Somerset Co., MD; died between 16 Dec 1720 and 10 Feb 1723 at Somerset Co., MD.  Worcester Co. Maryland deeds show that John Outten owned property called Singleton at the time of his death in 1708/9 and that it was divided among his four sons Thomas, John, Samuel and Abraham. Samuel died "an infant" and as a result his share when to John Outten's eldest son Thomas. It is the statement that Samuel died an infant that is most interesting. We know that Samuel Outten was living in 1720 when his stepfather, Thomas Copes, left property to him. If this was the Samuel born in 1690, as originally thought, then he would have lived to be at least 30 years of age, hardly an infant. Therefore, it is now believed that the first Samuel died young and a second Samuel was born circa 1705 as Abraham's twin. Thus he would have been between 15 and 18 years old at the time of his death.

Generation Two

2. Thomas² Outten (John¹) was born on 11 Oct 1684 at Somerset Co., MD. He married Sabro Jones, daughter of John Jones, circa 1710 at Somerset Co., MD. His will written on 3 Jan 1725 at Somerset Co., MD, mentions father John, unnamed wife, children Thomas, John, Samuel, Elizabeth and Abraham. It was witnessed by Abraham Outten, George Truitt, Samuel Truitt.  He died before 19 Nov 1726 at Somerset Co., MD. On 20 Jun 1727 at Somerset Co., MD, his estate is listed with George Truitt and Abraham Outten as next of kin and Sabera Outten as Administratrix/Executrix, inventory was taken Dec. 4, 1726.

3. John² Outten (John¹) was born on 23 May 1687 at Boquerternorton Plantation, Somerset Co., MD. He married Sarah Purnell, daughter of John Purnell and Director Smith. His will written on 29 Aug 1733 at Somerset Co., MD and updated Nov. 26, 1735, mentions wife Sarah, sons John, Abraham, Purnell, Obed, daughters Mary Sturgess, Directer, Tabitha, Edith, testors William Connor, John Cottingham, Thomas Maddux.  He died in Feb 1735/36 at Somerset Co., MD, at age 48. On 29 Apr 1736, his estate inventory was taken, it was approved Jun 4, 1736, appraisers, Edward Beauchamp, James Trahern, creditors, William Conner, John Conner, next of kin, Daniel Sturgis, John Outten, administratrix/executrix Sarah Outten at Somerset Co., MD.

4. Elizabeth² Outten (John¹) was born between 1693 and 1699 at Somerset Co., MD. She married George Truitt circa 1720 at Somerset Co., MD. Her will written on 13 Sep 1774 at Worcester Co., MD, mentions sons George, Outten, Job, Samuel, granddaughters Elizabeth Truitt, Elizabeth Selby dau of William Selby, and states that she was the relict of George Truitt, witnesses Benjamin Purnell Jr., William Truitt, Isaac Purnell.  She died before 9 Sep 1776 when her will was proved at Worcester Co., MD.

5. Mary² Outten (John¹) was born on 25 Nov 1702 at Somerset Co., MD. She married Daniel Selby circa 1720. There were no children of Mary Outten and Daniel Selby.  She married Thomas Purnell III, son of Thomas Purnell and Elizabeth Hammond, in 1721 at Somerset Co., MD. She died on 27 Jun 1772 at Somerset Co., MD, at age 69.

6. Capt. Abraham² Outten (John¹) was born circa 1705 at Somerset Co., MD. He married Rhoda Peale, daughter of Thomas Peale and Ansle. His will written on 22 Apr 1747 at Worcester Co., MD, mentions sons Matthew, William, Abraham, John, Thomas, daughter Sarah witnesses Wm. Kitchin, Wm. Nelson, A. Dennis, wife Rhoda.  He died between before 5 Jun 1747 when his will was proved at Worcester Co., MD. In 1753 at Worcester Co., MD, his estate made payment to Mathew Outten's guardian and Sarah Outten's guardian.

17.    i. Abraham³, born circa 1730 at Somerset Co., MD; married Jamimah.

         ii. William; born circa 1730; died 6 Feb 1759 at Worcester Co., MD, William was a Deputy Sherriff who was murdered attempting to collect Maryland taxes in an area claimed by both Delaware and Maryland. Maryland Depositions show a case in 1759 John Willey vs. State of Maryland. John Willey was charged with the murder of William Outten; 9 Apr 1759 at Worcester Co., VA, his estate inventory was taken, appraisers James Houston, Adam Spence, mentions Matthew Outten, Outten Sturgis, administrator John Purnell approved 14 May 1762.

18.    iii. John, born circa 1730; married Mary Atkinson.

         iv. Thomas; born circa 1730;  his will written on 7 Feb 1765 at St. Martin's Parish, Island of Barbados, mentions brothers Matthew, John, William & Abraham, friends Elizabeth Deacon of NY & Rebecca Deacon, witnesses Wm. Pinder, Wm. Carter, John Irving, no wife mentioned; he died before 29 Dec 1769 when his will was proved at Worcester Court.

         v. Matthew; born circa 1735; married Rachel Marshall, daughter of Isaac Marshall and Sarah Peale, between 5 May 1752 and 11 Dec 1756; died before Mar 1773 at Worcester Co., MD.

19.    vi. Sarah, born circa 1735; married Thomas Sturgis.

7. Esther² Outten (John¹) was born in 1708 at Princess Anne, Somerset Co., MD. She was also known as Hester.  She married Jonathan Sturgis after 10 Feb 1723/24. She died after 1755 at Somerset Co., MD.

Generation Three

8. John³ Outten (Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1715 at Somerset Co., MD. He married Atalanta before 5 Mar 1746. He died in 1767 at Accomack Co., VA. On 24 Feb 1767 at Accomack Co., VA, Jesse Outten was appointed administrator of his estate.

His will written on 3 Mar 1768 at Worcester Co., MD, mentions wife Ann, children Molly Toadvine, Esther, Levi, Betty, Leah, Nancy, Thomas, Matthias, Samuel & Sarah, witnesses Benjamin Handy, John McDaniel, Elizabeth Victor.  He died before 29 Apr 1768 when his will was proved at Worcester Co., MD. On 31 Aug 1769 at Worcester Co., MD, his estate accounting lists appraisers Thomas Martin, George Martin, creditors Isaac Morris, Thomas Purnell, Sr., next of kin Betty Outten, Levi Outten, executrix Ann Outten.

10. Abraham³ Outten (Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1719 at Somerset Co., MD. He married Comfort Hammond, daughter of John Hammond. He died before 22 Feb 1765 at Worcester Co., MD, when Comfort Outten was named executor of his estate. On 28 Oct 1765 at Worcester Co., MD, his estate is listed, appraisers William Smoch, John Smock, creditors Comfeld Atkinson, William Turner, next of kin John Hammond, Edward Hammond and administratrix/executrix Comfort Outten.

His will written on 8 Sep 1795 at Somerset Co., MD, mentions wife Mary, all lands for life, at death to son Purnell, son Joseph, daughter Sarah Kellam, wife of John Kellam, grandson John Purnell Outten, 10 lbs, rest of estate equally to Joseph Outten, Polly Burnet, Tabitha Twiford, Betty Smith, Lovey Lankford & Delitta Taylor, wife Mary, ex. Witnesses John Conner, Wm Conner, Wm Moore.  He died before 8 Dec 1795 when his will was proved at Somerset Co., MD.

13. Abraham³ Outten (John², John¹) was born in 1723 at Somerset Co., MD. He married Betty White, daughter of John White III and Mary Prior, on 3 Dec 1747 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. He died on 31 Jul 1769 at Somerset Co., MD. On 23 Jul 1770 at Somerset Co., MD, his estate accounting Mary Outten and Purnell Outten are listed as next of kin and Isaac Outten is executor, inventory taken Nov 27, 1769, a second accounting was done Nov 21, 1770 and approved Mar 20, 1771.

14. Obed³ Outten (John², John¹) was born circa 1728 at Somerset Co., MD. He married Esther Harristory before Oct 1754. He married Isabel Stringer Selby, widow of Ezekiel Selby, circa 1775. He married Sarah in 1780 at Marumsco, Somerset Co., MD. He died circa 1793 at Sussex Co., DE.

15. Edeth³ Outten (John², John¹) was born in 1729 at Somerset Co., MD. She married Samuel Henderson on 3 Jun 1751 at Marumsco, Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. After Samuel's death she married his brother, Jacob Henderson, on 7 Aug 1764 at Coventry Parish, Rehobeth, Somerset Co., MD.

17. Abraham³ Outten (Abraham², John¹) was born circa 1730 at Somerset Co., MD. He married Jamimah.  Very little information has been located regarding Abraham son of Abraham and Rhoda Outten. The attributions of wife and children shown here are not proven but represent a reasonable hypothesis.

22. Jesse⁴ Outten (John³, Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1745 at Accomack Co., VA. He died in 1808 at Delaware. On 12 Aug 1808 at Sussex Co., Delaware, Isaac Outten paid bond as administrator of Jesse Outton's estate.

Jesse⁵ Jr.; born circa 1770 at Delaware; married Elizabeth Meekins 28 Mar 1805 at Sussex Co., DE; married Ellen Moore 14 Feb 1814 at Ross Co., OH; died between 22 Sep 1851 and 28 Feb 1852 at Vermilion Co., IL.  His will written on 22 Sep 1851 at Vermilion Co., IL, and proved 28 Feb 1852 mentions wife Ellen, grandaughter Louisa Hand, daughter of eldest daughter Sally, granddaughter Mary Elizabeth Outten, daughter of son Ezekiel M. Outten.

         ii. Isaac; born circa 1770; died 28 Jan 1835.

         iii. Purnell; born circa 1775; married Ann Huffington, daughter of William Huffington and Susanna Coulburn, circa 1794; died after 27 May 1819.  He and Ann Huffington had six children mentioned in the will of Ann's father, William Huffington in 1819.     

23. Molley⁴ Outten (Thomas³, Thomas², John¹) was born before 1738. She married Henry Toadvine, son of Henry Toadvine and Alice Dixon, before 3 Mar 1768. She died after Jan 1782 when she was mentioned in the will of her husband Henry Toadvine.

         viii. Isaac; born 1779 at Worcester Co., MD; married Polly Outten Toadvine, daughter of William Toadvine and Pricilla Toadvine, 21 Dec 1799; died before 1850.

24. Levi⁴ Outten (Thomas³, Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1743 at Maryland. He married Hannah circa 1776. He married Esther, (possibly Esther Handy) before Apr 1804.   Levi Outten served as an ensign in the Worcester Maryland Militia during the Revolutionary war. When about 60 years of age, Levi along with most of his children moved to Kentucky. Land records in Maryland show Levi and his wife Esther selling property in April of 1804.  A year later in 1805, Thomas son of Levi was acting as his father's agent in Maryland in some real estate transactions. The first Kentucky land records are in 1807.  He married Rachel Field on 12 Dec 1813 at Bourbon Co., KY.  His will written on 29 Nov 1824 proved March Court 1825, mentions wife Sally, children Matthias, Anna Outten, Polly Candry, Hetty Headington, Betsy Showard, heirs of Sally Innis, and Thomas; witnesses Benjamin Handy, John McDaniel, Elizabeth Victor. He died on 15 Feb 1825 at Lexington, Fayette Co., KY.

         iv. Sally; born circa 1785; married John Ennis 2 Jan 1808 at Fayette Co., KY; died between 1810 and 1824.

         v. Betsy; born circa 1785; married Levin Showard before 1825.  Betsy Outten Showard daughter of Levi Outten is possibly the same person as Eliza Outten who married Levin Sharrod on 20 Oct 1803 in Accomack Co., VA.

         vi. Ann; born circa 1790.

         vii. Abram; born between 1790 and 1800.

         viii. Hetty; born circa 1795; married Nicholis Headington 8 Mar 1814 at Lexington, Fayette Co., KY; died before 8 Jul 1841 at Fayette Co., KY.

         ix. Matthias; born circa 1795 at Maryland; married Margaret Morris 10 Aug 1820; died 5 Mar 1862.

25. Elizabeth⁴ Outten (Thomas³, Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1745. She married George Truitt between 1768 and 1775.

27. Matthias⁴ Outten (Thomas³, Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1758. He married Esther. His will written on 17 Jul 1824 at Accomack Co., VA, mentions daughter Sally T. Coleburn wife of James H. Coleburn, son William D. Outten and grandchildren John H. Copes, Elizabeth Copes, Betsy F. Coleburn.  He died before 25 Oct 1824 when his will was proved.

28. Sarah⁴ Outten (Abraham³, Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1745 at probably Worcester Co., MD. She married (James?) Godfrey.

29. John⁴ Outten (Abraham³, Thomas², John¹) was born circa 1750 at probably Worcester Co., MD. He married Martha Davis. He died before 13 May 1785. On 13 May 1785 at Worcester Co., MD, his estate records show Martha Outten administrix.

         i. Abraham⁵; born circa 1780; died 1804.  In Aug 1789 Nancy Pennewell was appointed his guardian at Orphan's Court Worcester Co., MD.

         ii. Benjamin; born 6 Sep 1784; married Sarah Kelleam Shockley 17 Jun 1818 at Worcester Co., MD.  In Apr 1791 James Johnson and Martha his wife were appointed his guardians in Orphan's court Worcester Co., MD.

30. Sarah⁴ Outten (Purnell³, John², John¹) was born on 7 May 1743 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. She married John Kellam on 24 Feb 1762 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD.

31. John⁴ Outten (Purnell³, John², John¹) was born on 6 Aug 1745 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. He married Violeter Addison, daughter of Ellijah Addison. He died before Oct 1773 when his widow was mentioned in her father's will as Violater Window.

         i. John Purnell⁵; born 25 Dec 1769 at Coventry Parish, Rehobeth, Somerset Co., MD; married Sarah Smith 25 Jun 1791 at Accomack Co., VA; died 1812.   He was also known as Purnell John.

32. Tabitha⁴ Outten (Purnell³, John², John¹) was born on 30 Jan 1750/51 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. She married Robert Twiford. It is likely that Tabitha Outten was the second wife of Robert Twiford. She would have been only 13 when Robert's first child Revel was born. It is not known which children are Tabitha's but the first three or four probably were not.  She died circa 1800 at Accomack Co., VA.

33. Mary Purnell⁴ Outten (Purnell³, John², John¹) was born on 10 Nov 1753 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. She married Joseph Barret on 24 Oct 1773 at Coventry Parish, Rehobeth, Somerset Co., MD. She died after 1795.

         i. Robert⁵; born 5 Jul 1775 at Coventry Parish, Rehobeth, Somerset Co., MD; died 24 Aug 1804 at age 29.

34. Purnell⁴ Outten (Purnell³, John², John¹) was born on 2 Jan 1761 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. He married Elizabeth Taylor on 26 Jul 1785 at Accomack Co., VA. He died circa 1798.

His will written on 18 Sep 1796 at Accomack Co., VA, proved 26 June 1798, mentions wife Elizabeth, sons John Houston, Shadrack and Joseph, daughter Molly and brother Joseph.

         i. John Houston⁵; born circa 1788 at of Elizabeth City, VA; married Euphan Latimer; died before 16 Apr 1844.

         ii. Shadrack Wales; born 14 Mar 1790 at Virginia; married Margaret Moore, daughter of John Moore and Nancy, 1 Mar 1817 at Accomack Co., VA; married Vienna between Feb 1835 and 1838; the War of 1812 Virginia Bounty Land & Pension Applications lists Shadrack W. Outten's widow as Nancy. Thus, he probably married a third time, this time to Nancy; died 17 Nov 1870 at age 80.

         iii. Joseph; born circa 1792.

         iv. Mary P.; born circa 1794 at Accomack Co., VA; married James Savage 11 May 1815 at Accomack Co., VA.  As a widow in the 1820's Mary P. moved to the western shore, Elizabeth City Co. to join her brothers, Shadrack W. and John H.

         v. Rev. Purnell T.; born circa 1797; married Ann P. Sturgis, daughter of Thomas Sturgis and Sally, 8 Jan 1821 at Accomack Co., VA; married Elizabeth Nock 2 Jan 1827 at Worcester Co., MD; his will written on 8 Apr 1834 at Accomack Co., VA, added codicil dated July 9, 1937, mentions wife Elizabeth, sons Purnell Andrew, Philip Doddridge, and Patric Henry; died by March 2, 1838, when his will was probated probably at Accomack Co., VA.

35. Loved⁴ Outten (Purnell³, John², John¹) was born on 3 Sep 1763 at Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. She married Jesse Maddux Lankford.

37. Isaac⁴ Outten Sr. (Abraham³, John², John¹) was born on 13 Sep 1748 at Coventry Parish, Rehobeth, Somerset Co., MD. He married Sarah Waggamon on 11 Jan 1770 at Coventry Parish, Rehobeth, Somerset Co., MD. He died on 7 Sep 1819 at Mason Co., KY, at age 70.

39. Capt. John⁴ Outten (Abraham³, John², John¹) was born on 28 Oct 1753 at Outten's Landing, Coventry Parish, Somerset Co., MD. He married Polly. He married Polly Baker. He died circa 1825.  There is considerable research required on Capt. John Outten. Information presented here is complied mostly from secondary sources and is in some cases conflicting. It does seem clear that he married a woman named Polly. It is not clear if he married twice both times to Polly. The birth order of his children and the attribution of the children to each of the two wives is also questionable as are three sons Jacob, George and John Jr.

         vii. Joseph Hazel; born circa 1802 at Somerset Co., MD; married Zipporah Brannock, daughter of George Brannock and Sidney Woodland, 9 Jan 1834 at Sussex Co., DE; died 21 Feb 1834.

40. Esther⁴ Outten (Obed³, John², John¹), also known as Hester, was born circa 1781 at Sussex Co., DE. She married Rev. Daniel Baker on 9 Jul 1800 at Sussex Co., DE. She died on 6 May 1824.

         i. Margaret Rawlins⁵; born 22 Jul 1801; married Isaac A. Adams 18 Mar 1829.

         ii. Esther Phelps; born 17 Oct 1802.

41. Abraham⁴ Outten (Obed³, John², John¹) was born in 1782 at near Concord, Sussex Co., DE. He married Sophia Spicer, daughter of Hales Spicer and Constant Mezick, in 1808. He died in 1842 at near Middleford, Sussex Co., DE.

         i. Mary Lingo⁵; born 8 Nov 1809; married James Outten, son of John Outten and Sarah Baker, 22 Mar 1831 at Sussex Co., DE; died 2 Jul 1882 at Concord, Sussex Co., DE, at age 72; buried at Concord Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery, Concord, DE.

         ii. Sally; born circa 1813; married Evan Scott 23 Sep 1848 at Delaware; died after 1870.

         iii. Nancy A.; born 28 May 1814; married James Outten, son of John Outten and Sarah Baker, 6 Oct 1882; died 2 Jan 1894 at Concord, Sussex Co., DE, at age 79.

         iv. Eliza; born circa 1816; died in "middle life."  She had two children.

         v. Thomas Adams; born 3 Dec 1818; married Charlotte Williams, daughter of John Williams, 6 Jan 1858 at Concord, Sussex Co., DE; died 9 Nov 1889 at age 70; buried at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Seaford, Sussex Co., DE.

         vi. Seth Lingo; born circa 1820; married Elizabeth W. Outten, daughter of John Outten and Sarah Baker, 8 Aug 1848 at Sussex Co., DE; married Nancy Lloyd 5 Dec 1855; died before 12 Jan 1864 in "middle life." 

         vii. Obed Baker; born circa 1822; died 9 Nov 1838 at Sussex Co., DE.

         viii. Sophia; born circa 1828.

         ix. Rebecca Jane, also known as Jane; born 8 May 1828; married Thomas Bradley 17 Dec 1855 at Caroline Co., MD; died 26 Oct 1884 at Kent Co., DE, at age 56.

         x. Perry; born Jun 1831; married Catherine 25 Dec 1855 at Talbot Co., MD; died 22 Sep 1903 at Dorchester Co., MD, at age 72.

42. Rachel⁴ Outten (Obed³, John², John¹) was born in 1787 at Sussex Co., DE. She married Seth Lingo.

         i. Mary⁵; born circa 1810; married Jesse Clifton.

         ii. William; born circa 1815; married Nancy Clifton.

43. Jacob⁴ Outten (Abraham³, Abraham², John¹) was born circa 1750. He married Elizabeth. His will written on 25 Apr 1778 at Northampton Co., VA mentions three sons Timothy, Jacob, and John, unnamed wife, and four children. Mentions property in Newburn, Craven Co., North Carolina on News River. It was signed Jacob Houghton.  He died before 12 May 1778 at Northampton Co., VA when his will was proved.

         i. Jacob⁵; born 1770; he may be the Jacob who married Margaret and died in South Carolina.

         ii. Timothy; born circa 1772; married Betsey Moore 13 Feb 1796 at Northampton Co., VA; married Kesiah Mathews 23 Jun 1810 at Northampton Co., VA.

         iii. John; born circa 1774; married Phillis Evans 1 Sep 1792 at Fairfax Co., VA.

         iv. possibly Betsey; born circa 1776; married Littelton Stripe 20 Feb 1796 at Northampton Co., VA. 

44. <son>⁴ Outten (Abraham³, Abraham², John¹) was born circa 1750. He married Mary Clemmons, daughter of Stephen Clemmons, before Feb 1782.

         i. George⁵; born between 1760 and 1770.

         ii. Jacob; born circa 1770; married Miss Hope, daughter of Mr. Hope and Ann Stockley; married Keziah Conquest 5 Aug 1804 at Accomack Co., VA; died circa 1806.

         iv. Revil; born between 1775 and 1780; married Polly Cherricks, daughter of James Cherricks, circa 1800; died between 1821 and 1827 at Worcester Co., MD.

         v. Susanna; born circa 1780.

45. Abraham⁴ Outten (Abraham³, Abraham², John¹) was born circa 1755. He married Mary Wise on 2 Feb 1785 at Accomack Co., VA. His will written on 6 May 1785 at Accomack Co., VA, and proved 2 Feb 1786, mentions wife Mary and unborn child.  Probate mentions John Wise Outten infant heir at law.  He died on 31 Dec 1785.

         i. John Wise⁵; born 21 Nov 1785 at Accomack Co., VA; died 9 Sep 1805 at age 19; buried at Wachapreague Cemetery, Rt. 605, Wachapreague, VA.

46. Samuel⁴ Outten (John³, Abraham², John¹) was born before 12 Apr 1767. He married Ann Parker. His will written on 21 Jan 1788 at Accomack Co., VA, mentions wife Ann and under lawful age children William and Tabitha. Wife Ann and John R. Parker Executors, witnesses Henry Parker and John Parker. He died by 24 June 1788, when his will was proved at Accomack Co., VA.

         i. Tabitha⁵; born circa 1785; married Henry Selby 16 Apr 1810 at Worcester Co., MD.

         ii. William; born circa 1785.
